Basic Tips for Renting Projectors
 -- Jim Gelder, Projectorian.com

Nothing can blow a presentation as quickly as a bum projector. When you're trying to conduct a class or make a sale, your goal can be stymied by a fuzzy image, a malfunctioning remote, or a bad connection.

When you're getting ready to rent a projector for that big meeting, following a few basic tips can help you avoid a major disaster.

The first thing to consider when renting a projector isn't the projector at all, but the other equipment that goes with it. If you are in a large room, you may need a microphone and amplification equipment.

Also, if your presentation, or the presentation of your speakers will be shown from a laptop connection, make sure that you know ahead of time whether your speakers will have their own laptop, or will expect one to be provided.

And of course, the screen itself is a major consideration, you will need to get a good quality screen that is well-matched to your projector and the room's characteristics. The lighting of the room itself should be taken into account when selecting a projector rental. Test all the equipment ahead of time. In addition to giving the projector equipment a dry run, make sure all of the laptops that will be used in the presentation will work with the projector. In general, almost any laptop will work, but they must have a video port.

Decide ahead of time which options you will need. For example, most projectors include a zoom lens, which lets you adjust the size of the image without having to physically move the projector. This is an especially useful feature if you are presenting in a small room without much leeway.

The new wireless projectors also offer some advantages, but before going wireless, do be aware that there will be a minor delay between when you give the signal and the projector reacts. Wireless may cost more, and if you are planning to show full motion video in real time, you will not be able to do this with a wireless projector. However, wireless does make setup easier and eliminates cable clutter, and it also makes it much easier to switch between PC servers.

Rental agencies may carry only a few brands of projectors, but it pays to be informed ahead of time. Do some research on the different brands available, and become familiar with the various features that are offered.

Some of the best models include projectors from companies like Mitsubishi, Hitachi, InFocus, and NEC. Also, find out the rental policies of the various agencies. If you need a projector only for a brief presentation, find an agency that will allow you to take a half-day rental to save money.

Also be sure to check into the repair and/or replacement procedures of your rental company, as also recommended here. Boxlight also provides some decent information on the topic on their tips page on their website.
